Pasadena, CA is home to the annual Rose Parade, the historic Rose Bowl stadium, diverse dining options and world renowned museums. Though these attractions may be what puts Pasadena on the map, the locals know that its much more– a beautiful city nestled at the foot of the mountains, home to many outdoor attractions where you can walk, run, and play, all while enjoying the sunny California weather. If you’re a dog owner, it also happens to be a great spot to explore the outdoors with your pooch. In a city with parks galore (many of which are dog friendly), there is one off-leash dog park that is sure to be a great new playground for you and your dog.
At Vina Vieja Park there is something for everyone. Slides, monkey bars and play structures for kids, benches and table for picnics or a nice relaxing break. But our favorite part? The Alice Dog Park — an off-leash dog area for Fido and friends that provides tons of space for dogs to run and romp. Named after Alice Frost Kennedy Dog, a Pasadena philanthropist and avid Humane Society supporter, the dog area was first opened in 2007 through the tremendous efforts of a Pasadenans Organizing Off-Leash Canine Habitats (POOCH). POOCH is a group of local volunteers who gathered together to raise funds and work with the city to create a park for dogs to play at off-leash.
The Alice Dog Park is divided into two sections — a 2 ½ acre, grassy area for large dogs and a 1 acre grassy area for small and special-need dogs. Each area is gated with a double-gated entry, making it safe and secure for your dogs to run freely. Both areas also have countered hills, trees, concrete benches for sitting, drinking water, and poop dispensers.
Though closed on Tuesdays for city maintenance (which ultimately means a nicer, more well-kept dog park!), the dog park is open every other day from dusk to dawn. It’s a popular park, always full of friendly dog owners and new buddies for your pooch! Outside of the Off-Leash area, there are also nice paths for a on-leash dog walk. Bring the whole family to Vina Vieja and no one will be disappointed.
